Jazmin Marshall knew two key things when it came to putting together her home office and crafting space. One, she wanted to incorporate a sherbet-tone watercolor wallpaper mural she found from Drop It Modern. And two, that her goal “was to be able to walk in and feel inspired and ready to create,” she says.
To help make those wishes a reality, Jazmin tapped designer Gina Sims, who added color and practicality to every square inch of the room. The end result? A room that not only looks great but works hard, too.
1. Create Zones
Sims designed the room with zones for Jazmin to scrapbook, make the cards she sells on Etsy (SincerelyJazminPaper), and work remotely for her job at a nonprofit. By splitting the room into zones, each with its own unique purpose, it's easier to stay organized.
The large table serves as the primary crafting area; the narrow wood desk is her workstation. A set of IKEA drawers below the magnetic pegboard serves as additional crafting space. Sims dressed up the drawers with a coat of dusty green paint and new handles. Jazmin keeps the top two drawers empty to hold in-progress pieces so they’re protected between crafting sessions.
2. Utilize Vertical Space
To get the most storage out of every square inch, Sims fashioned the room with multiple organizational features on the walls. Painted lilac and mint green, a large magnetic board above the green drawers holds Jazmin’s most-used tools as well as inspo and mementos.
Tall wood ladders, inspired by similar ones used in Paper Source stores, organize and display paper inventory. (The ladders and the wood desktop were made by Jazmin’s neighbor, a woodworker.) Storing these tools on the wall helps free up space in the room. Otherwise, Sims would have needed to add another piece of furniture or an additional storage solution to house supplies.
3. Incorporate Storage That Works Hard (and Looks Good)
Designer Sims knew some of the storage solutions would have to live out in the open, rather than being tucked away inside a closet. So she opted for decorative storage options. In addition to the wall storage, an IKEA drawer unit and a closet system from The Container Store house the bulk of her tools. A woven basket for paper rolls and wire racks for cards, which Jazmin found on the curb, provide more storage.
4. Showcase Supplies with Open Storage
For prettier supplies, like fine papers and Jazmin's finished cards, Sims added storage that would display the fanciful patterns. Displaying these out in the open also makes them more accessible when creativity strikes and allows Jazmin to see what she has on hand. Pretty tapes, pens, and other tools are also used as decorative objects throughout the room, which gives the space a more lived-in feel.
5. Transform a Closet Into Dream Storage
Every inch of this closet is outfitted for efficient storage and function. Upper shelves hold bins filled with gift bags, ribbon, and handmade paper party decorations. Mesh drawers store small scrapbooking supplies, stamps, and tools. A shelf in the middle houses larger equipment: a printer and precise cutting machine. The mix of opaque and see-through drawers keeps the closet neat without becoming too orderly. “I’m always surprised how much joy my closet brings me,” Jazmin says.
6. Pick a Color Scheme with Personality
A hard-working craft room can be inspired by the art made inside of it. Jazmin wanted the space to boost her creativity, so it was important for the room to feel like the art she creates. Designer Sims used the wallpaper as a focal point on one wall, then spun the room’s palette from there, pulling the paper’s pale peachy tone onto the walls and choosing more vibrant accents to complement the mural’s cool tones. By adding color and vibrancy, Jazmin is further able to distinguish the room's zones and organize products within them.
